When you are in need of new windows, either for new construction or to replace dingy, broken, or scratched up windows, there are many great window supply, installation, and repair companies in Maryland. You should look for a company with both enough experience in installing and replacing residential windows and that has a good reputation in the community. Check the Basics Whoever you choose, make sure they have been in business for at least 10 years, have a track record for improving the values of homes with their windows, through better curb appeal and improved comfort. If they offer more than windows, that may be a good thing, depending on just how much focus they put on their window repair and installation business. Ideally, the company you choose should offer a good guarantee and a free quote for your particular situation. Be sure to ask for references from former customers. If the company cannot supply at least 3 of these references, do not give them any further consideration. Lack of references is a big red...

Ten Interesting Facts about the Empire State Building

By on Jun 15, 2016 in Travel

“The Empire State Building (ESRT) is the closest thing to heaven in this city,” said Deborah Kerr, famous movie actress of the 20th century, expressing the love and sentiment many New Yorkers and Americans hold for this iconic building. Yet, for all the seeming familiarity people have for the ESB, there are many interesting historical facts about it that are unknown to most people. Here are ten of the most interesting of those facts from its storied past. 1. The Empire State Building is located at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, the site of the original Waldorf Astoria Hotel which was torn down to make way for the skyscraper. There is a mythical story from early American history that this is the place where General George Washington tried to rally his outgunned Continental Army soldiers as they retreated before an overwhelming British force sent to seize New York City early in the Revolutionary War. 2. One reason for the building of such skyscrapers as the ESB was the rapid population and commercial growth of New York in the late 19th and early 20th century. The city had a population of seven million people by 1900 and had become the business center of the world. Yet, with only 22 square miles of prime business area available on Manhattan Island, land was at a premium. The only solution was for architects to develop buildings that could rise higher and higher. Thus, the skyscraper was born with the construction of the Flat Iron Building in 1903 which towered at a dizzy twenty stories. By the 1930s there were hundreds of such buildings, over which the ESB would rule when it was finished in 1931. 3. Famous New York politician Al Smith‘s failed bid for the presidency in 1928 was one likely reason for the building of the ESB. Smith had pinned all his future hopes on winning the Whitehouse that year, and when he was defeated by Herbert Hoover it was the first time in 25 years that he was out of political office. The conglomerate that formed to build the ESB wisely included Smith as their public face, who was a favorite son of New York City’s lower East...
